Garaetteok are Korean rice cake sticks made from regular rice flour (maepssal). You use them in dishes like tteokbokki or serve them as a side. This simple recipe shows you how to make the chewy sticks at home.

Ingredients
- 250 g short-grain rice flour (not glutinous rice flour)
- 240 ml water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
Instructions
- Bring the water to a boil in a pot.
- Mix the rice flour and salt in a large bowl.
- Slowly add the boiling water to the flour mixture, stirring constantly, until a sticky dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a heatproof work surface and keep kneading with wet hands until it is smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into long, thin sticks.
- Steam the shaped sticks in a steamer over medium heat for about 40 minutes, until translucent and elastic.
- Brush the steamed rice cake sticks lightly with sesame oil to keep them from sticking.
- Let the sticks cool, then serve them or use them in another dish.
