Ingredients

  • 500 g wheat flour
  • 1 tsp dry yeast
  • 300 ml warm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 4 scallions, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp neutral vegetable oil
  • Extra flour for the work surface

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the yeast, sugar and warm water and let stand for 10 minutes, until foamy.
  2. Add the flour and salt and knead to a smooth dough. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Divide it into 12 equal pieces.
  4. Roll each piece of dough into a long, flat rectangle. Brush each rectangle with sesame oil, sprinkle with chopped scallions and roll it up from the long side.
  5. Fold the dough roll in half and twist the ends together to form the typical flower shape.
  6. Place the shaped buns in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper, cover with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Set the steamer basket over the boiling water and steam the buns for 20 minutes, until puffed and cooked through.
