Main dish
Nasi Tomato is a Malaysian rice dish that you cook in one pot with tomatoes, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. The beef cooks in the same pot. The rice tastes fruity from the tomato and warm from the spices.

Ingredients
- 400 g basmati rice
- 600 ml water
- 2 large tomatoes, diced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 cloves
- 3 cardamom pods
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 500 g beef, cut into cubes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
Instructions
- 1. Wash the basmati rice thoroughly and let it drain.
- 2. Heat the oil in a pot and fry the onion, garlic, cinnamon stick, cloves and cardamom until the onion is translucent.
- 3. Add the tomatoes, turmeric, paprika and chili and keep frying until the tomatoes soften.
- 4. Add the beef, season with salt and pepper and sear it well until browned on all sides.
- 5. Add the washed rice and the water, stir and bring to a boil.
- 6. Once the water boils, reduce the heat and cook the rice, covered, over low heat for 20-25 minutes, until the rice is tender and the water is fully absorbed.
- 7. Take the pot off the heat and let the rice rest for 10 minutes.
- 8. Fluff the rice with a fork and transfer it to a serving platter.
- 9. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve.
