Mugwort tteok (ssuktteok) is a Korean rice cake made from glutinous rice flour and mugwort powder. The mugwort turns it green and gives it a slightly bitter, herbal aroma, and the sugar adds light sweetness. Eat it at celebrations or as a snack with tea.

Ingredients

  • 125 g glutinous rice flour
  • 50 g sugar
  • 8 g dried mugwort powder (about 1 tbsp)
  • 240 ml water
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Cooking oil for greasing

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the glutinous rice flour, mugwort powder, and salt thoroughly.
  2. Bring the water to a boil in a medium pot and dissolve the sugar in it.
  3. Stir the dry ingredients into the hot sugar water until a sticky mass forms.
  4. Reduce the heat and cook the mass for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly, until it is thick and elastic.
  5. Turn the mass out onto an oiled surface and let it cool.
  6. Once it is warm enough to handle, divide it into equal pieces and shape them into small cakes.
  7. Arrange the finished tteok on a plate and serve as you like.
